To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.' - Pat Conroy

Lilly Pulitzer Virgin

I snagged each goodie that I wanted from the Lilly Pulitzer online sale.
It was my first ever LP sale and I'm glad to say, it wasn't as much a nightmare as what people made it out to be. Sure, the Adie Shorts in Shorely Blue were sold out, but thankfully, I snagged them at 6pm.com for even cheaper than what the LP sale had them online for, so with that 6pm purchase, I got every item I had wanted.

(all images via Lilly Pulitzer)

I have been eyeing that Janice Shift Dress in white (one) ever since I started liking LPs clothing, but I wasn't about to pay that $238 price tag! My prom dresses didn't even cost that much.
So when I saw that gorgeous beauty on sale for $66, I snagged it up.

The thing about the LP sale is that even though an item may be in your shopping cart, does not guarantee it will be there when you check out, so if you truly want something, buy it as soon as you put it in  your cart, and then go back and purchase other things.

The Janice shift dress was my #1, but I also knew I wanted Cadence to have a matching Besame Mucho print to go along with my Christine sundress in the same print, so I snagged up the Deanna Romper (five), and checked out with those two items.

Next, it was onto shorts! My #1 in shorts were the Scuba to Cuba Callahans (two) and then the Adie shorts in Shorely Blue (four). By the time I when to checkout the Adie shorts were sold out, so I went ahead and checked out with my Scuba to Cuba, because I did not want to miss those!

After I checked out with my Scuba to Cuba shorts, I searched a lot of online boutiques that sell LP also, and they were all sold out. I follow a few LP resale pages and someone mentioned 6pm. I've followed 6pm for a while now but never thought to look there, so I visited the site, and although the prices reflected sale prices (or in this case, even cheaper!), when I would go to checkout, it was showing them at their full price of $68 - not going to happen! I emailed customer service and not 10 minutes later the site was working and reflecting the sale price of $28.90, so I quickly snagged up those shorts and checked out.

Last on my list were Big Flirt Callahans (three). I had waited all day, and didn't know if I wanted to splurge on another LP purchase, but I knew I would regret not buying them, and they were on sale at $24 off with free shipping, so I took the plunge.

I'm so happy with my LP purchases!

What did you get?!

weekend and Lilly

This weekend was a nice relaxing weekend. Tarl was on call so he couldn't do much, so we stayed around the house all weekend, spending time together and doing a little pre-fall cleaning.

We had such beautiful weather so I made sure we made the most of our time outside.

I will say this though, I slept in until 10:30 on Sunday! I haven't slept in that late in  years. It was great, and much needed!

Yesterday afternoon Cadence and I rode over to my sisters home and we all went for a golf cart ride.

Love living in the beautiful lowcountry!

On Friday evening my mom tagged along while Cadence and I tried on pageant dresses for her upcoming pageant. As much as she and I both love pink, we've never gone with a pink dress up until now.

We tried on a white and gold dress, this one, a purple one and a mint green one and she loved this pink one. So did I. So did my mom, so we're going with pink this time - look at that smile!

I shopped my very first Lilly Pulitzer sale this morning and got everything I wanted, but one pair of shorts. They had the shorts in stock, they just didn't have them in my size, bummer, but I'll continue to keep an eye out on the resale pages. There was actually a pair posted for sale online today in my size, but the girl wanted more than they were for sale, brand new, online, and I'm not one to pay markup unless I am desperate for it, and right now, I'm not that desperate.

I got myself one pair of shorts and a shift dress, and I got Cadence a romper for Christmas.
Yay!

I hope this week flies by for us all! I'm ready for Friday, aren't you?!

First Grade on a Friday

I just purchased this top off of Asos this morning and cannot wait to wear it.
My current obsession is anything that shows a little shoulder, and this shows a whole lot of shoulder.
I've never worn a shirt that was completely off the shoulder like this one, but I imagine paired with some skinny jeans and tall brown boots, it'll be just perfect for date nights in the fall.

//

New York is slowly on the horizon. My sister and I are in the 30s now, counting them down one day at a time. I'm ready to walk those city streets again. Sipping coffee on little corner cafes, eating at some of the worlds most amazing restaurants. Seriously September, you can come anytime.

Speaking of travelling, our family Disney trip is now only 8 months away. We planned it a year ago, so now that we are only 8 months out, it doesn't seem so long.

I just recently came across an Etsy shop who makes monograms for Disney magic bands.

She makes them with Lilly Pulitzer vinyl too!
I mean here, just take my money!

These are a must for Cadence and I!

//

I cannot believe that  as of today Tarl and I have an official first grader on our hands.
Days are long, but the years are short <-- so damn true!

The summer went by so quickly. I'd say I'm sad to see it go, but in all honesty, we still have about a month of hot weather, so it's not truly over. Cadence was beyond ready to be back at school to learn and spend time with her friends.

Tarl, Cadence and I have had a great summer, but we are all ready for mums and pumpkins and tall white chocolate mochas!

//

Cadence has a pageant coming up closer to the end of August and tonight we go and do her most favorite thing, try on pretty dresses. We have a lady whom we rent pageant dresses from and oh my goodness they are gorgeous! The room is filled with sparkly things, rhinestones, glitz goodies everywhere! We always love going to visit. My mom is riding along and we're making a girls night out of it.

Happy Weekend - xo

Weekend

Friday, Tarl and I took off work and spent the day with Cadence.
It was great!
We went to a local water park and swam and slid on water slides for most of the day. It was nice and so much fun! A great ending to a fun summer!

Later on that evening, we got Cadence packed up for a weekend with Tarls parents and he and I hit the road to Carowinds, which is a theme park on the border of SC and NC.

There actually is a spot in the park where you can stand on the state line and be in two places at once. (see a pic below)

We had a blast! We rode rides from sun up to sun down. It was a fun birthday celebration for him.
I'm so blessed to have this wonderful man in my life! Love him always, and can't wait to spend every birthday with him!

I cannot believe that school starts this week and I officially have a first grader :)

Tips from a Local | Savannah

I adore Savannah, Georgia.

In my opinion it is one of America's most beautiful cities, of course I am partial, living in Savannah's backyard my entire life. It doesn't matter what part of downtown you are in, either two blocks to the east or west, north or south will be some sort of square with tall oaks and hanging moss. Buildings both old and new. Beautiful architecture. Corner cafe's. Antique shops. Incredible food. You name it, Savannah probably has it.

 Just stunning!

When I travel I always do research. Often times when people vacation, they don't like planning or doing. They just like going and relaxing. That's great, if that's what you're into, but to each their own.

Getting in a car, travelling hours, paying for a hotel room just to sit and relax isn't my idea of a good time. I'd much rather save the hotel costs, sit at home in my sweats and binge on chocolate ice cream and netflix.

When I travel I like to take in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of whatever city I am visiting.

I search Pinterest, Tripadvisor, and several Google articles to look for those special places. I always try to find reviews from the locals, because they know the good spots. They know the best time of year to visit, they just know, because they live in that environment daily.

With that being said, and Savannah being a huge tourist destination, I wanted to give anyone pondering the idea of visiting this great city, some tips, from a local, yours truly...

Time of Year

Honestly, Fall is the best time of year to visit any location in the Southeast. The weather is just starting to get crisp. The humidity starts dying down. You can wear tall boots with skinny jeans but still rock a short sleeve shirt. You can walk miles and miles and not break a sweat. The leaves start changing and it's just beautiful.

If you're not a fan of Fall like me, than I would suggest some time in late March. The weather still has some chill, and the flowers start blooming. Early summer, around May is another good option. Steer clear of June, July and August. It is the hottest months here in the South. The thermometer may say 85, but I assure you the humidity makes it seem like 110! I'm not a fan of boob sweat and afro's while on vacation, but if that's your style than go for it!

Where to Stay

Hotels are one of my #1 things that I research. I want to make sure that I find a hotel that doesn't break the bank, but also one that is centrally located to everything and preferably with a view.

I have stayed in three hotels in Savannah and I would suggest all three, but like any hotel, they each have their pros/cons.

The Westin is actually in South Carolina, believe that! The name suggests that you are in Savannah (which in a sense you are) but you're actually in the great state of SC!

I've stayed in the Westin, twice. Both times were great and out of the three it's my personal favorite and one that I would suggest over and over again.

Pro:

You get to see all of River Street. Sure staying on River Street is nice, but then  you don't have the actual view of River Street, just the cobblestones and the river. Staying at the Westin, you get to see the river, and the beautiful Savannah skyline.

Con:

Getting into Savannah. The Westin has a shuttle boat which takes their guests back and forth from River Street to the hotel that runs all throughout the day, but like most things it stops at a certain time of night. I believe 10pm, but don't quote me on that. If you drive your car as a tourist, sure it's a quick 5 minute driver over the bridge into downtown, but good luck finding parking! If you fly into Savannah a five minute drive you wouldn't think would be costly, but bear in mind that the cabbie is driving into two different states. It's a joke, I know, seeing as how the state line is literally right there! But a minimum fare for a five minute drive from the Westin to Downtown is $25 (tip not included!)

Tip:

Pay the extra and book a balcony river view room. Worth every last cent!

Savannah Riverfront Marriott is one I had the pleasure of staying in at a discount as it was a work function.  Once the work function was over we had the option of staying or just going home. Tarl and I turned it into a weekend and became local tourists.

Pro:

You are on Riverstreet, but still secluded from the hustle and bustle of all the tourists and traffic as it's on the far east side of river street. This is perfect for someone who wants to wind down after a long day of sight seeing. You can come back, relax and not worry about noisy crowds or late night party goers.

Con:

The Con, as crazy as it may seem, goes hand in hand with the pro. This hotel is truly on the far east side, which means there is quite a bit of walking from the hotel to the center of it all. It's not crazy far, but it is definitely a walk. Although the west facing side of the hotel has a great view of Riverstreet, the east side doesn't have anything. Basically, Riverstreet and historic Savannah ends on the East side of this hotel.

Tip:

Again, splurge on a balcony room facing the river and/or Riverstreet.

Tarl and I stayed in the Courtyard Marriott the night we went to the Josh Turner concert in Savannah. He was playing in the Savannah Civic Center and we wanted a hotel within walking distance so we could enjoy the concert, maybe grab a drink after and then walk back to the hotel.

This hotel was very nice. We had a balcony room and we enjoyed sitting out there in the evening looking down at the sidewalk, people watching.

Pro:

This hotel isn't directly located on River Street and is quite a few blocks from it actually, so the cost is more efficient than that of a hotel located directly on the water front.

Con:

Although located in the heart of downtown, it's off the beaten path and it requires blocks of walking to get somewhere, so just keep that in mind if you stay here.

Tip:

Pay for valet parking. Seems not worth it, trust me, I know, but the parking garage in this hotel can be quite small and dark.

I always enjoy staying overnight in Savannah. It's a lot of fun playing hometown tourists.
Here are some hotels that I've heard wonderful things about. They are on my list to stay...

Riverstreet Inn
Hyatt Regency
Andaz Savannah

Eats & Sweet Treats

Food, food, food. Most families #1 question every day of the week, let alone on vacation.
Where to eat?!

You've got to realize if I broke down every single restaurant it would take up pages and pages of this blog post. I've been eating in Savannah for over 20 years, but I do have a few favorites and a few that I would say to skip, again, all these opinions are solely my own. Just because I had a poor experience doesn't mean that everyone does. Just because I enjoy the food at a certain place, doesn't mean that everyone will. Just keep that in mind.

Huey's on the River - did you see that pic above of the shrimp and grits? Their food is amazing! Just get there early for lunch or dinner to put your name in. The wait is never under 45 minutes, so make sure you have patience! Worth the wait though!

Spanky's - get the fried vegetables! It's the entire reason we go...order the large, trust me you'll regret it if you only order the small.

Musato's Japanese Steakhouse - yes, it's hibachi. Nothing new, right? Well they have the best Japanese food that I've yet to try anywhere else. Their sushi is delicious too.

The Pirate's House - this is a tourist trap, but it's also a locals favorite! Their fried shrimp is perfectly crisp on the outside and juicy and delicious on the inside. The ambiance is stunning and they even have a pirate who often walks around to take pictures and converse with guests.

Corleone's - for years I wanted to eat here. It's nestled right on a little corner in downtown with cafe tables on the exterior and gorgeous Italian decorations on the interior. Authentic Italian cuisine is what the signs read on the outside. Well Italian's must love salt, and a little bit too much. My scallops tasted nothing but salt. I felt like a cow licking a salt brick. Our appetizer, again, nothing but salt. Tarl's dish, salty. We couldn't even eat our dinner. Corleone's is also very pricey. I will never again pay that much money and eat there with the experience we had.

The Lady & Sons - Paula Deens infamous restaurant located on the corner of city marker. I went here with Tarl, my sister and her husband. LaTesha and I were so excited about trying it because for years we have always wanted to go. I'm not sure if it was the build up of wanting to eat there, or just expecting more from a well known and established chef like Paula Deen, but the food was lackluster. You had the choice to eat off of the buffet or order off a small menu. Tarl and Aaron ordered off the menu, LaTesha and I chose the buffet. Let's just leave it at this. My mom cooks a way better fried chicken. The green beans looked like they came from a can and Aaron & Tarls dinners just weren't great. Don't get me wrong, the food was okay, but not $100+ worth in my opinion.

La Berry - stop here. Get the taro yogurt. You're welcome!

Things to Do and See

Savannah has endless sight seeing options, but I suggest going on a horse drawn carriage. This way you get to see a lot of downtown and also hear stories of how certain places became famous. There are several different options for tours. Tarl and I have done two ghost tours in Savannah and it was great. We've done a riding one and a walking one. The walking tour was honestly my most favorite because we got to stop and take pictures and actually take the time to see the sights, but both are a great option.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a must see. The exterior architecture is unbelievable and the interior is gorgeous!

If you're more into night life just hit up Riverstreet anytime after 8pm. There are endless bars to suit every fancy. Karaoke. Dancing. Cocktails. Beer. Sippin' wine. You name it, there is a bar to suit your needs. My favorite bar for ambiance and a view is the Hyatt. You can sit outside with a drink in your hand with views below you of Riverstreet and the beautiful river. Across the river is the Westin so you get to see lights from the hotel and pool and see the boats as they cross the river. My favorite bar for drinks is Wet Willies, which is a franchise, but I don't drink often, so when I do I want something fruity and frozen.

The best way to see Savannah, from a locals point of view, is to simply walk. Start at one end and go to the other. There is something on every corner to see, eat or do.

If you're thinking of visiting Savannah anytime soon, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Tuesday Rambles

I first want to thank everyone for all the sweet messages and emails that I got yesterday after posting about my remodeling/painting I did in our home on my blog and Instagram. Our home may be far from a mansion, but it's still our home and I want to bring out it's full potential.

I still am searching for the perfect gray for our living room and these colors by
Benjamin Moore are fabulous!

Gray Paint Colors from Benjamin Moore: horizon, paper white, revere pewter, stone harbor, stonington, thundercloud, wickham, wolf gray, booth bay. A Life Well Lived

Stonington and Thundercloud are calling my name. Wickham is lovely but I think it'll still be too light of a color. The search is on...

//

I have been wanting a crafting machine for a while now. If you know one thing about me, it's most likely that I love a monogram. Cadence is practically a walking monogram with all of her shirts and I'm always looking for new monogrammed goodies. A friend of mine owns a cricut and loves it. She uses it all the time and has even done several items for me in the past. I've also gotten other goodies from people who owned a cricut and made something pretty out of it.

With that being said, I honestly want to try one for myself. This way I don't have to wait for the goods to be monogrammed and I can quit dishing out money for something that I could learn to do at home. I've heard pros and cons of each, but do any of you own a Cricut or Silhouette? If so, which do you prefer and why.

Thanks for any advice - all tips are welcome!

//

I just started watching Scandal and where the heck have I been?
What a great show! Olivia Pope is boss! 'nuff said!

//

Only two more days in this short work week - holla!

Weekend Recap | DIY Edition

This weekend was a remodel weekend in our house and let me tell you, it's amazing how a little paint and an area rug can transform an entire room.

The first thing I did was sand down the coffee tables. They were cheap tables that came with our home when we bought it as we purchased the furniture package that way we wouldn't have to go out and furnish an entire house along with our new mortgage.

After I sanded them down with sand paper, I gave them three coats of a crisp white and I used a standard paint brush. No rollers! Rollers will not work well on furniture. I understand that hand painting takes a lot of time and patience, but it was well worth it.

After all three coats were finished and dried I used a rag and some finishing wax to help the paint seal so it would last over time with kids, pets and a husband who likes to put drinks and feet propped on the coffee table.

Tarl purchased me the rug I wanted. He's into colors and I was dead set on a white/beige rug so it would work with the brown furniture we currently have and then eventually transition into whatever new furniture we choose. He also bought me the white window curtains, and voila...

I am so happy with the transformation. It completely took away from all the brown. We eventually want to pain the walls, but I hate painting and it's not a project I'm ready to tackle just yet.

Here's a before and after...

Our entertainment center was built into the wall. It was one of the selling points for us when we were looking at homes. Like most things though, after time you get sick of looking at it and want something different. I knew I wanted to paint the trim around the TV white, and paint the brown walls gray (to match whatever color we choose for our living room). So I purchased a paint sample at Lowe's in the color Shorely Gray. I did three coats of white trim and three coats of Shorely Gray on the walls surrounding it. I'm so glad I purchased the sample and didn't just buy a gallon and paint the entire living room in this color because it's too light of a gray for me. I want a gray a few shades darker. All in all, it still looks better than what it was, and again, helps brighten the living room.

Before...

After...

(see how the gray is almost a white/blue color. I'm not a fan, but I'll purchase another sample in the next week or so, repaint, and see if it's the color we'll end up using)

Side by side...

And yes I have my Fall decor up. I couldn't wait. Go ahead, judge away!
But seriously though, how pretty do those pumpkins and gold leaves look?!

The next project was Cadence's bathroom, and it all started with a mason jar.
I knew I wanted her toothbrush holder to be a pink mason jar and all you need is acryllic paint, a mason jar and something old that you don't mind getting paint on. I used this super old dirty pan that we had in our trashcan.

Fill the mason jar up about 1/4 - 1/2 of an inch high. Depending upon the size of the jar itself.

Slowly turn until the paint is completely covered on the inside and then set opening faced down and leave it that way over night. Make sure you have something (like this pan) underneath as the paint will spread!

Next up was the canvas. I purchased a large canvas from Michael's and in silver painted my most favorite saying as a mother to a daughter. "What if I fall? Oh but my darling, what if you fly!"

Then Tarl and I painted her entire bathroom a crisp white.
I am smitten with how it turned out after we added pops of pink/gold/silver.

I purchased the shower curtains, towels and rug from Family Dollar. I love the print of the shower curtain and although the pictures are making the colors look more red, they are actually a hot pink color.

I also found these gorgeous gold starbursts at Family Dollar in a three pack for $10 - can't beat that!

I painted two canvas' for her. She said she wanted something South Carolina. Girl loves her home state! We also hung her robe on a hook right underneath.

Over her mirror looks bare still. I'm wanting to either get her initials and place them over or some sort of gold dots or silver dots to give it the feel of an accent wall.

Here are the before and after pics...

We went to the mall on Saturday.
I had some Victoria's Secret coupons that I wanted to use before they expired. I got a pair of panties and this shirt which came to a total of $40, for only $14! Score!

In the front it looks like a regular long sleeved t-shirt, but the back has the prettiest cutout detail.
I cannot wait to wear this in New York!

Kirkland's had their fall decor out. In fact, a lot of stores did.
I bought the prettiest garden flag on sale. Naturally it has a huge pumpkin on it :)

Sweet girl made a wish. It's a tradition each time we go.

This weekend was not a relaxing one. I was non-stop from Friday afternoon through to Sunday night, but I am so happy that I got everything that I wanted to done and am even happier with the way that it turned out.

What makes this Monday bearable is the fact that it's only a four day work week. Tarl and I took off Friday for his birthday and we're going to spend the day together as a family and then have some date nights to celebrate.

Happy Monday...xo
