To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.' - Pat Conroy

For my fellow South Carolinians

...here is some random information about our lovely little state!

There is only one covered bridge left in the entire state. It's the Campbell's bridge built in 1909!

You can no longer drive through the bridge, but you can park and walk around the area. They say it is extremely haunted and at night (isn't it always at night!) you can hear very eerie things coming from inside the bridge.

Every few years residents of Irmo, SC see a monster in Lake Murray which they say looks like a very large snake with pre-historic features. It was first seen in 1973. Did I mention I leave Wednesday for Irmo for training? Oh my...

At Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia over 2000 different species live there with no bars or cages. Me and the family go at least twice a year and they have an island in the center of the zoo, about the size of two large swimming pools. This is where they keep some of their monkeys. The monkeys could literally leave the island and swim across to fellow on-lookers. I've never seen this happen, I just assume they could. Wouldn't it be sweet if we could pet baby monkeys!

They say in Marion, SC, if you drink water from Catfish Creek, you truly never want to leave! Thousands of people have drank from Catfish Creek and set up roots in Marion.
 Hmm...that's a bit creepy?

Summerville, SC is known as "Flower town in the Pines". It's named this because of it's beautiful blooming flowers throughout the Spring and Summer months. Particularly Azaleas. I've seen Summerville throughout this time of year and it truly is gorgeous. We spent a day just driving around looking at old southern plantations with their blooming azaleas.

There are more than 300 Public and Private golf courses throughout our great state! If you ever vacation here, no need to fret about finding a golf course to play at.
I assure you the choices are endless!

There's been over 51 major motion pictures filmed in South Carolina. A few you would know are
Dear John, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Ace Venture: When Nature Calls, The Notebook, Forrest Gump, The In Crowd, The Patriot, and Something to Talk About.

Here is a few extra tid-bits from the above: in the movie "Something to Talk About". They built a barn and house for the set. The same house that I grew up in was the lumber used from that movie. My dad was great friends with the contractor who built it and he got all the lumber for a steal! My dad also got to meet Julia Roberts, for a split second. I hate to speak ill of anyone, but he said she was extremely "snobby" acting towards him. In "Forrest Gump", the scene where he wrecks the boat into the dock. That boat was the boat of my dad's good friend who he hunted with. When the movie scouts came to town they said his boat had the most character and wanted to use it, he got paid a lot of money for them to use his boat. He also got to meet Tom Hanks and Gary Senise.

The Peachoid is a large water tower in Gaffney, SC.

It's supposed to be a peach, obviously, but many mistake it for an orange butt. They say from an airplane it looks like you're being mooned by a giant. On that note, even though Georgia is the Peach state, peach is actually South Carolina's state fruit.

Our official state dance is The Shag. Everyone knows this, but did you know that the Shag originated from a party one night. Story goes, a fun crowd had a little too much too drink. They were attempting the Jitterbug, but the Shag was born instead.

Vanna White was born in South Carolina.

There are more than 187 miles of coastline. No wonder why thousands of people visit each year.
 Our beautiful beaches!

In South Carolina it is illegal to display a confederate flag at a court house. This may be why so many people fly them in their lawns! Here's a history lesson for those who do not truly understand what the flag means. The confederate flag was the Souths flag, especially during the civil war. The civil war was fought, not because of race issues, but because of economical and political reasons. The government was trying to take every thing over and the South was fighting for it's individualism.
It's unfortunate that the Confederate Flag gets a bad rap for something people did several years ago, that was extremely cruel and violent and something that I do not stand for or condone, but at the same time I wish people would take the time to research and learn what something truly means before they perceive it as something totally different.

In Myrtle Beach it is illegal to urinate in their water parks. Can you believe this?! This should not only be illegal, you should be evicted from ever coming back! I have been to water parks in MB and I sure hope no one was breaking the law when I went!

Lastly, we have over 4.7 million residents living in South Carolina. I can see why. Of course, I am partial but South Carolina is such a beautiful place to grow up, and raise a family in. Luckily I have done both. I couldn't imagine having lived somewhere else.

  2. I have thought the same thing about those monkeys at the zoo! How long before they escape?!

I think a lot of people don't understand that the Civil War and the Confederate flag weren't about slavery. They were about Southern states wanting to have independence and some of their own laws.

There is so much ghost lore in South Carolina. My second high school is supposedly haunted.
