To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.' - Pat Conroy

Roundup | Happy Weekend!

These fall decorations have my mind racing with ways to decorate our home come September! Can you believe September starts next Tuesday?!

I want to sip on coffee here every morning. Preferably Maxwell House with French Vanilla creamer, but even black coffee would taste great sitting there...okay, maybe not.

These shades are great for Fall, and these are at the top of my wish list and great for every single day of the year, but than again, I'm an aviator gal.

Watch this if you want a giggle.

In my personal opinion, this is right on point. Double standard much?!

I think we can all agree we do this? I know I do anyways. You have a Hanson song stuck in your head now, don't you?

I love this FaceBook page. I read the scriptures they post daily. They are always inspiring, but than again the entire Bible is.

...and this was 2 years ago...

The same pageant is tomorrow...wish my girl good luck!

Disney World | Sweet Treats Edition

When one thinks of Disney World, chances are your mind immediately thinks Mickey Mouse, fun rides and fireworks, but after your first visit, your mind quickly races to food anytime you visit thereafter, at least, that's how it is for my family anyways.

After our first meal last year, we were hooked. Each meal we had was incredible, but we all looked forward to dessert. Every meal you get in Disney, comes with dessert if you are on a dining plan. Pretty sweet right? Pun intended.

With our 2016 Disney vacation quickly upon us, I am set to make our dining reservations some time in mid-October, which had me reminiscing on some of our most favorite sweet treats from last year.

I thought I'd share...

Our very first day in Disney was one spent in Hollywood Studios, formerly known as MGM.
We ate a quick service lunch at Pizza Planet. We were immediately drawn in by all of the Toy Story decorations and the true Pizza Planet ambiance. Naturally they serve pizza (which was delicious by the way) but they had an array of desserts to choose from, particularly cupcakes, and this cupcake was a nice surprise.

I thought that it would taste like any other store bought cupcake. One that tastes as though it has been sitting on the shelves for months with no flavor and dry cake underneath all that icing, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

The cappuccino chocolate cupcake at Pizza Planet was divine. It was moist cake with a creamy frosting, drizzled with a chocolate ganache on top. The cupcake itself had small hints of coffee, or cappuccino, which really brought out the chocolate flavor.

Another tidbit of information. This picture does not do this cupcake justice. It's huge in person.

Chef Mickey's was fantastic. We loved meeting the original characters (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Donald), as well as taking the monorail directly to the restaurant, since the restaurants located in Disney's Contemporary Resort, and if you didn't know, the monorail runs directly through it!

I love a table service meal where you get to sit down the entire time and order directly off the menu verses standing in line to get food off of a buffet but the great thing about Disney buffet's, the desserts. There are endless options, and they are all surprisingly sweet and incredibly delicious.

Not only are the desserts great to eat, but the presentation of them looks like something out of a magazine, no sloppy banana pudding here!

yellow plate-bread pudding with a caramel sauce
white plate-red velvet cupcake, carrot cake, chocolate cupcake tart, lemon tart, cheesecake, choclate tarte filled with fresh fruits including raspberries, blueberries and a mandarin orange

My favorite dessert from Chef Mickey's buffet was the warm bread pudding drizzled in caramel sauce. Another great thing about that bread pudding, you are in control of how much caramel sauce you get to put on top! Yum!

Port Orleans French Quarter Resort beignet's may have been my favorite treat from the entire trip, but that's only if you tortured me to pick just one. Pillowy little pockets of sweet air covered, literally covered, in powdered sugar. I am so looking forward to getting my hands on some more of these come April! Plus we are staying in Port Orleans this time, so I'll be in walking distance!

Disney Dining Plans come with snack credits. Pretty self explanatory, but just in case you are unfamiliar, it's where each person in your party gets one snack for each night of your trip. We always ended up getting a sweet treat each night using our snack credit, and on day two of our trip last year, we ventured to Epcots, Kringla Bakeri Og Cafe, located in Norway where I chose this massive berry cream puff to snack on right before Illuminations began.

Fireworks and a fruit filled pastry? Sign me up!

Remember that douche, Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast. Well he actually owns his own Tavern, located in the heart of Magic Kingdom. One thing you may remember about Gaston, is how large he is. Not large like a marshmallow, but tall, "manly" as he likes to call himself. Well let me tell you one thing if you don't take in any other information from this blog post, get Gaston's Tavern cinnamon roll! Seriously, get one! It can be used as a snack credit, and it's gigantic! It's full of cinnamon, covered in icing and absolutely delicious. One snack credit satisfied Cadence, Tarl and myself until dinner that evening!

Cinderella's Royal Table... sigh!
What a gorgeous place to eat. You know that huge castle in Disney World, you know which one I'm talking about, the big blue castle as soon as you walk in the gates, well inside of that castle is a restaurant called Cinderella's Royal Table and it's a must do for us every single trip!

The number one reason is obviously so Cadence can see her besties, you may know them, Cinderella, Jasmine, Aurora, Ariel...but the number two reason, the food, in particular, the desserts!

when the clock strikes twelve dessert

whipped topping with chocolate, pistachio mousse served with a biscotti cookie, and powdered sugar dusted brownies

L'Artisan des Glaces, found in Epcot's, France, has some of the creamiest ice cream and gelato you ever did taste. Flavors start anywhere from Pomegranate sorbet all the way to Profiterol ice cream.

I went with trusty old chocolate, Cadence went with plain vanilla, and we gobbled our ice creams up before we were even out the door. Tarl had a dessert made on site, and I wish I would have done the same. He ordered the Croque Glace, any flavor ice cream served in a warm brioche bun, topped with your choice of chocolate or raspberry sauce, and placed in an iron (looks similar to a waffle maker) to get that brioche bun nice and toasty warm, but keeping that ice cream nice and cold inside.

It was incredible.

As a side note, look at those Mickey head shapes they make out of ice cream. Disney is all about the details!

When I planned our meals for last years trip I knew I had to try my best and get reservations at Be Our Guest, located in another castle, except this time, it's Beast and Belle's castle (Cadence's favorite)! I couldn't score dinner reservations but I did luck out and get lunch ressies, and this Passion Fruit Cream Puff hit the spot! It's filled with Passion fruit mousse, and topped with whipped cream and a decorative, but edible, chocolate chip.

If you have seen Beauty and the Beast, than chances are you know the song that Lumiere sings (the candlestick). "Be our Guest" (which is also the name of the restaurant) has a famous line in it's song, "try the grey stuff, it's delicious, don't believe me, ask the dishes...".

Well I believe you Lumiere, because we ordered the Grey Stuff cupcake, not for the chocolate cake, but for the grey stuff icing, because let's face it, that's what anyone wants to try when they go, and y'all, it was great. I was worried, because grey icing isn't necessarily the most appetizing looking thing, but it was wonderful! Another must-do for us come April.

Some consider this final pastry a breakfast item, and I agree, but Mickey waffles are a must, and covered in syrup, they are a perfectly sweet concoction. I wouldn't say they taste any different than a regular waffle if I'm being honest, but they are better, because they are Mickey shaped :)

So tell me, have you been to Disney, if so, what are some must eat treats for you and your family?

What's Up Wednesday

Well we are at the half way point for this week...woo-hoo!
I'm ready to get this weekend started, but I'm sure we all are.

Today I'm linking up here for What's Up Wednesday to answer a few 'every day' questions.
Let's get started...

What are we eating this week?

With school now officially in session, that means homework, and reading, and a lot of extras that we didn't have in the summer, which means not as much time to spend in the kitchen come 6pm, so I have turned to my trusty old crock pot, which is a favorite for me. It's so great taking 10 minutes at night to prepare dinner for the following day, let it simmer on the crock pot while you're at work, and when you get home, dinner is ready, and whatever you have prepared is usually tender and juicy since it had plenty of time to simmer and cook on a low heat, like the crock pot.

Monday - Crock Pot Beef Stew
Tuesday - Grilled Chicken Salads
Wednesday - Crock Pot Chicken and Rice
Thursday - BBQ with the in-laws
Friday - Concession Stand

Normally we only eat out once during the week, and most of the time it's with my in-laws. There home town doesn't have much in the restaurant department (not saying that we are a restaurant town, but we have more options than they do) so they come visit us, and we eat dinner at a local eatery, this Thursday we have plans for BBQ. Yum! Cadence has pageant practice on Friday, and then we are going to the football game, so we'll grab something at the concession stand. I'm OK with that, it sure beats cooking on a Friday night. Maybe not the healthiest choice, but the concession stand's BBQ sandwich with extra pickles ain't half bad #justsayin

What am I reminiscing about?

Honestly, our Disney vacation. We originally had plans to go back to Disney this September, one month from this Friday to be exact, but we decided to go next April instead, that way Cadence wouldn't have to miss any school. Tarl and I were talking last night about our vacation originally only being one month away, but now being seven months away. We quickly reminded ourselves how blessed we are to even have the luxury to go on a vacation, let alone a Disney vacation for eight whole nights. We truly are blessed beyond measure. Sometimes we just need a good kick in the ass to remind ourselves of that.

Still, if I'm being honest, a weeks vacation sounds great about now, but I'll just have to be patient, seven months isn't too long, plus New York with my sister is only 20 something days away!

I'm ready for that delicious Disney food!

Riding rides with these two cuties!

Bringing out the kid in this handsome man!

The endless parades and firework shows!

The friendliest ducks you ever did meet that grace Magic Kingdom!

This view!

This sweet girls happy face!

But mostly, to have moments like this one. Priceless memories, where your little one meets their very favorite princess. Gets to talk to her favorite princess. Gets to dress as her favorite princess. Gets to dance with her favorite princess. Her and Belle spent over five minutes together. Tears stung both mine and Tarl's eyes over the pure joy this brought to Cadence.

This is what I'm beyond ready for!

What am I loving?

-That Christmas is only 4 months away.
-That Fall is so close I can almost taste/smell it.
-That I have a husband and daughter who have a special bond (read below)

Today after homework was done and dinner was ate Cadence randomly said "you know the zip line at the park up town? I've always been scared of doing it but I'll do it one day." I looked at her and said today's the day. So we took the drive to the park and here is my sweet girls first time doing the zip line. I told Tarl to let her do it by herself (and he did) but he didn't leave her side. I am beyond blessed to have such a great, respectful, cautious, loving child and a husband who is the best father I know! A father I know who will never leave her side no matter what obstacles she may face in life, no matter how big or in this case, small ‪#‎myheartisfull‬

I shared that yesterday to family and friends, along with the video of her doing the zip line. I'm not sharing the video here, but I wanted to share how special those two mean to me!

What have we been up to?

School! School functions. It consumes our lives for 9 months of the year, but a great education is well worth the time put into it.

What am I dreading?

Honestly, the pageant on Saturday. Cadence loves doing them. She loves picking out her dress, getting her hair done, the fact that she gets to wear a little bit of blush. Me, eh...I enjoy them because she enjoys them. If I'm being honest however, they are time consuming. You have to get there early, and you're there for around 3 hours, when your child only has to go on stage for a total of about 8 minutes. It's very tedious. You have to wait on the girls ahead of your group to go out one by one, and the groups after you. Then they get crowned, and you have to wait for your group to get crowned. I enjoy seeing the smile it puts on Cadence's face, but I'm always glad to go grab some lunch when it's done and over with.

What am I working on?

Nothing major other than work at the moment. I've started lists, Christmas lists, birthday party lists for Cadence's birthday, and of course NYC packing lists!

What am I excited about?

NYC and Disney :)

What am I watching and/or reading?

No books currently, but I truly want to start reading the Bible. As far as TV, Scandal! Seriously, if you haven't started watching Scandal yet, get on that!

What am I listening to?

I've had this on repeat.

What am I wearing?

I'm still in work dresses and my Jacks, but I cannot wait until it's time for skinny jeans and tall boots. White t-shirts and chunky scarves! Have you seen my 'want it, need it' Pinterest board lately? If you haven't, check it out, lately all I have pinned has been Fall related.

A few of my faves...

Polka Dot Sweater + Pink Vest

J. Crew puffer vests.

What am I doing this weekend?

Football. Pageant. Spending time with my two favorites!

What am I looking forward to next month?

Well, if you haven't already heard...

Visit Central Park at night | Tips For First-Time Travel To New York City

NEW YORK (HOLD HER TIGHT)...She'd always dreamed and said she'd be a dancer. You could teach her, reach her and romance her, but I know she really loves me too. She just had to find out about you....RESTLESS HEART

Central Park, NYC. I have high hopes of exploring more of the city that never sleeps when we finally move back to the east coast. #wishiwashere #PowerOfPlace http://wishiwasheremovie.com in select theaters Friday, July 18th

What is your favorite back to school tradition?

We always get up early the morning of the first day of school and take family pictures. I print out a cute little sign stating what grade she's going in, and we take pictures. This way I can keep up with how much our little one has grown, and hold onto those pictures as precious memories in the future.

Cadence's school has uniforms, and as most of you know, with  uniforms there are only so many options to choose from, so I make sure that I put her in the same style for those back to school pics. The white peter pan collared shirt, along with the plaid skirt, with a big bow in her hair :)

Just look how much she has grown!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, blessed beyond measure!

Fall Bucket List

So I know that a bucket list is so original, right?! #sarcasm
I do love to make a bucket list for each Fall season, it's a lot of fun and really gets my family out and doing things on those weekends where we might not have one thing in particular planned, plus, y'all know how much I love making lists.

Let's face it, Fall is the most perfect season, especially here in the South. Those days where you need nothing more than a short sleeve shirt, but jeans and boots and maybe a lite coat at night. Just perfection. Those are the days I like to get my family outside and doing things, so we're not cooped up in the house.

one / visit the pumpkin patch

Annually my family visits our local pumpkin patch. It has become a family tradition ever since Cadence was a tiny tot. We always enjoy our time there. Playing the games, getting a snow cone, visiting the petting zoo, taking the hay ride to the pumpkin field and picking out our very own pumpkin. I always look forward to doing this, so does Tarl, and Cadence especially.

Here are some pics of our trip last year.

two / pumpkin carving

Y'all, this is something my family takes very seriously, very seriously (emphasis on two)! Tarl and I are very competitive, and Cadence is quickly following in that streak right along with us, so we always make a competition out of it. Naturally, Cadence always wins :)

Tarl always has me post his pumpkin and mine on Facebook, and see which pumpkin gets the most likes...like I said, serious business in our house.

This was last years pumpkins. Tarl won. Tarl has won the last three years!
This year I'll have to get super creative with my pumpkin.
So which one do you like the best? I'll tell you whose is whose after you vote.

three / trunk or treat

Sure we always go trick-or-treating, but every year local Churches host what they call trunk-or-treating, which is when members of the church decorate the beds of their trucks or SUVs and pass out candy. It's always fun seeing acquaintances, and dressing Cadence up. She loves it because it's candy after candy after candy and only about three feet away, verses walking from house to house. What's not to love about that?!

four / make caramel or candied apples

I've always wanted to make homemade candied and caramel apples, but alas, I always buy the store bought stuff, heat it up and call it a day. This year, it's on the bucket list, and the two recipes below sound easy and delicious.

World's Best (and easiest...) homemade caramel! Great for popcorn, apples, and anything dip-worthy.

Best ever easy homemade candy apple recipe Add some cinnamon red hots and skip the red food coloring

five / stroll downtown Savannah

I so enjoy when we park at the Westin across the river, and then take the ferry (which is free) to Riverstreet. We grab a Starbucks and walk along downtown, in each square with it's tall mossy oaks with falling leaves. It's just stunning. Fall in Savannah is one of my favorites!

six / read fall books

I always loved reading to Cadence when she was younger, now that she can read, she loves reading to us. Reading is so important in a child's education. It opens there mind to a world of possibilities and imagination. Last year I bought some Fall books through the Scholastic book program at her school, and I can't wait to have her read them to us this Fall. Books about leaves and scarecrows and witches and cats. They're silly and funny, but most of all it's about the time spent together reading.

seven / boo at the zoo

This will be a first for us this year if we manage to go, but we love Riverbanks Zoo and have visited it each year, if not twice a year. However, we have never attended Boo at the Zoo. On special nights throughout October they encourage you to dress up and trick or treat. It sounds so fun! This year, if time allots, we want to take Cadence. If you are in Columbia or it's surrounding areas you should check it our. You can find more information on it here.

eight / s'mores by the fire

An annual tradition, and one I'm sure we will keep up with. Gooey marshmallows and melty chocolate..what's not to love?

nine / decorate outside

Our home isn't directly on the highway, so it's hard to see from the road and we've never decorated outside because of it. Nothing more than a garden flag or a mum or two. Well this year, I say the hell with it. I want to decorate regardless, because at least we will see it every day when we arrive home.

ten / the great pumpkin charlie brown

It wouldn't be a bucket list without this one. Halloween night, after trick-or-treating has ceased and we get home in our jammies. We settle down with a bowl full of popcorn and watch this movie.

I can't wait!

Weekending

I cannot believe that the weekend flew by so quickly, but it just means we're one week closer to the gorgeous Fall season! I did break out the boots this weekend, only for a short time though because it got hot as balls. For real though!

I am wearing my boots again today, but that's only because my boss keeps the office as cold as an Alaskan Christmas, so I feel boots are appropriate for the temperature in here.

I wore all three pairs of my new Lilly shorts this weekend and I am smitten. They are soft, comfortable and most of all, colorful. I paired each pair of shorts with a neon tank top. Walmart had tank tops for like $3 and they go perfectly with Lilly shorts.

On Friday night we headed out to our hometown football game. They ended up losing, but I mainly go for the chit-chat and snowcone stand. Cadence enjoyed playing with her school friends, so it's always a good time. Saturday we cleaned up the house and the yard and then went and ate dinner at Spanky's in Savannah. The food is great, but the entire reason we go is for our favorite appetizer, fried vegetables. They have an assortment of vegetables, seasoned, and then fried in a tempura batter. They are just incredibly delicious!

After dinner we went and picked up Cadence's pageant dress for her upcoming pageant this weekend. After we picked up the dress, she wanted to go and show it off to her Aunt Angela, so we headed over to my sisters and Angela drooled over the dress and how precious Cadence looked in it!

Cadence has been talking about Skech-Airs ever since she first saw the commercial on TV. When we bought her new school shoes, we bought her a cheap pair of slip ons (faux Tom's for like $8). A few months back I purchased her a pair of pink Converse off of a local resale page for super cheap, and she just now has grown into them, so we new we were set with shoes at least until cooler weather came. Well her daddy has her wrapped around his finger, so when we were strolling around the mall on Saturday, she just showed him a doe eyed look and she now has a new pair of black and hot pink Sketch-Airs. She swears they make her jump higher, run faster and it's like walking on a cloud. Seriously love that kid of mine!

Some stuff I've shared on FB lately...

Here's to hoping the week flies by...
