To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.' - Pat Conroy

Eating...
This week we're having Baked Ziti, Fried Porkchops and Pizza with a pepperoni jack-o-lantern on top. I'm also going to make mummy dogs one night this week.

We've also snacked on Halloween cookies.

Granted they're not homemade, they are still incredibly delicious and have the cutest little pumpkin faces on them :)

Look at these goodies if you really want to get festive...

We love Rice Krispie Treats in our house, so we replicated these in a different way. Rather than use tootsie rolls as the stems, we used pretzel sticks. The mix of sugary sweet and the salt from the pretzels were absolutely delicious.

Mini marshmallows and a teaspoon of neon orange food coloring.

Spread the treats out flat on some buttered wax paper.
Let cool, cut into squares, then form into pumpkins.
Cutting the squares ensures that each pumpkin is around the same size.

Time for stems!

Time to enjoy!

How cute are these for school lunches this week?
I made this for Cadence yesterday in her lunchbox and she loved it!

Want some more ideas for Halloween or to start prepping for Thanksgiving?
Check out my "It's Fall Y'all" board. I've been pinning like crazy!

Reminiscing...
My mind is still on Boo at the Zoo. We had such a fun time! You can read all about it here.

Riverbanks Zoo also has a separate ticket event for Christmas called "Lights Before Christmas".
Cadence loves the zoo and all the animals. Seeing her face at Boo at the Zoo was priceless so we're thinking of doing Lights Before Christmas as her birthday present. Maybe make it an overnight trip.
We're still tossing around ideas.

Loving...
I'm loving that Halloween is on Saturday and then November 1st arrives bright and early Sunday morning. Trust me, we're never ones to skip over Thanksgiving but let's be honest, once November 1st arrives it's fair game for Christmas stuff :)

Did you know ABC Family posted their TV schedule for all Christmas shows?
Go look!

Currently...
Tonight we have our Church's trunk or treat. Friday we have a cookout planned with my brother and sister-in-law, Saturday morning we have a parade to be in and Saturday afternoon all the Halloween festivities begin. Busy busy busy and I love it!

Dreading...
Breast Ultrasound. Eek!
In all honesty, I'm not really dreading it. The pain in my breast has subsided and the lump only arrives a few days prior to Aunt Flo. TMI? Maybe...oh well.
Both of those are pretty good indicators of just a hormonal issue and nothing more serious, but the doctor still wants to give me another breast ultrasound the beginning of December to be certain.
As scary as it may be, always be pro-active about your health, always!

Working on...
Getting everything ready for the holidays. I have to finish the last few details for our Halloween festivities for Saturday and get everything ready for the scavenger hunt.

I also have to start making lists for our advent calendar and our Elf on the Shelf.

Love the holidays!!!

I've said it a hundred times before but I highly suggest you and your family starting an advent calendar. It's such a fun way to count down the days of Christmas. Each night you put a little note in the calendar pocket with plans for you and the family to do that night, whether it's something like driving around to look at Christmas lights, decorating the house, reading a story or watching a Christmas movie. It's fun and we all look forward to what each night brings. In each little advent countdown I always put a candy cane Hershey's kiss down in there too, that way when Cadence pulls out the note with what we're to do, she also has a sweet treat.

You can purchase advent calendars anywhere, even the dollar store!

If you're looking for something special, I love this monogrammed one with the family name.

Here's a cute banner advent that you could hang over your mantle with clothespins, what a great idea!

Excited about...
This weekend. There is so much going on and I love it. Cookouts, bonfires, time with family, parades, scavenger hunts, games, trick or treating and fellowship with our Church family on Sunday.

Speaking of Church on Sunday, this past Sunday's message was such an inspiring one. This is where it pays to go to Church because had I just read over the scripture I wouldn't have thought twice about it, but our Pastor pointed it out and it made the entire congregation truly think about excuses and how too often we use them for not attending Church.

Luke 13:10-15

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

So here is this woman who has been crippled her entire life to the point where she cannot even bend her back to look up and yet she is at Church on Sunday. Then when Jesus healed her, rather than think back on how hard her life was, she immediately praised God for everything.

What a message!

Watching/Reading...
Walking Dead Spoiler Alert - do not read if you haven't seen Sunday's episode yet!

Glenn! Y'all, is Glenn dead? I mean my heart broke in a million pieces and my gut wrenched when I watched what happened. Tarl got furious and said he was never watching the show again, but of course, we all know how that goes.

Seriously though, did they kill Glenn off? Everyone thinks Glenn will survive because he's a main character but let's be honest, they've killed off plenty of main characters before so I don't think that would stop them. I just cannot believe it would've been sweet Glenn.

In my opinion he is gone. People on my FB have claimed that it was Nicholas' guts we saw, but even if it was I don't see how Glenn could've gotten out of that situation.

Thoughts?

Listening...
I'd be a total liar if I said I haven't listened to any Christmas music this week. What can I say other than I just miss it. It's been too long and a month is too little time to enjoy the voice of Michael Buble or Mariah Carey belting out to "All I want for Christmas is You".

I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it there all year - Charles Dickens

When I read that quote by Mr. Dickens I'm assuming he's speaking of Christmas music :)

Wearing...
Boots, boots and more boots!
Fall is the time of year for boots. Tall boots, brown boots, cowboy boots, just boots!
I can't get enough.

Next month...
After Halloween has passed we get ready for Thanksgiving. Lots of great food and family, what is better than that? We also start decorating for Christmas. I can't wait for twinkling lights, silver, gold, green and red, smells of pine and lots of hot chocolate. We also have a special girl's birthday!

Thanksgiving recipe...
My most favorite recipe is the most simplest, most delicious and has become a Thanksgiving staple for our family gathering. Ina Garten's Brussell Sprouts.

You take fresh brussell sprouts and cut the ends off.
Toss them on a pan with some olive oil, salt and pepper.
Bake at 400 degrees for about 30-40 minutes dependent upon the size of the brussell sprouts. They come out delicious and tender. While they're warm I add a little bit more salt and serve them in a dish. They are just so yummy and all us ladies preparing the dinner table normally eat half the bowl prior to dinner! It's like a healthier (and better tasting in my opinion) version of popcorn!
