To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, 'There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood.' - Pat Conroy

Eating Healthy

With all of the Holidays it seems that eating healthy goes right out the window. I am not one to eat healthy myself. I don't focus on carb intake, salts, sugars or calories. I simply eat what I like whether it's healthy or not. That's the trick though, find something you love that's healthy...case in point, my favorite fruit, the pomegranate. While watching Charlie Browns Christmas last night, I devoured the entire thing, the perfect thing about this is, there are so many health benefits with a pomegranate.
Inside a pomegranate are these little things called punicalagins, and they basically benefit heart and blood vessels, they lower cholesterol and blood pressure and increase the speed at which heart blockages melt away.
Scientists have currently been doing research with animals and have shown that a large benefit of a pomegranate is inhibiting breast, prostate, colon and leukemia cancers. They have not started this testing on humans yet, but just imagine if eating a pomegranate or two a week could help prevent these diseases?!
There is more information on the benefits of a pomegranate here!
